A Gold fish relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the Prussian carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is native to East Asia.
Goldfish weren’t always, well, gold.
Prussian carp, from which goldfish are traditionally a dull, gray-green hue. But mutations and breeding over the years created goldfish’ signature orange, red, and yellow found within the over 100 sorts of the fish today. Goldfish initially arrived from Europe within the 1600s and therefore the us within the 1800s, becoming what’s likely the primary foreign fish species introduced to North America.
Goldfish have two sets of paired fins and three sets of single fins. They don’t have barbels, sensory organs some fish have that act like taste buds. Nor do they need scales on their heads. They also don’t have teeth and instead crush their food in their throats.
The fish are known for having big eyes and huge amount of senses of smell and hearing. Their ability to listen is comes from small bones near their skull that link their air bladder and their internal ear .
