The USA celebrates its Veterans Day on 11th November every year, it is a dedicated time set aside to honor those who served in the U.S. armed forces during war period and peace. USA former President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day based on the Veterans Administration. From then to 1938, Armistice Day was declared as a legal holiday, set aside to honor veterans of World War I. In 1954, American Congress renamed the “Armistice Day” as “Veterans Day,” and later in 1954, officially declared it was a day to honor all American veterans of U.S. wars.
Today, American Veterans Day which was originally known as Armistice Day is a federal holiday in the United States. The government and the people observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans. They describe veterans as persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces and were retired under conditions other than dishonorable. When comparing with other holidays like Armistice Day and Remembrance Day that are celebrated in other countries, all are almost the same, and Veterans Day coincides with that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Large attacks of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany came to the peace.
The first Veterans Day statement was signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Oct. 8, 1954. In this first Veterans Day demonstration, Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower said that, “In order to ensure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.” This is the first Veterans Day speech.
Veterans Day is not the same as U.S Memorial Day which takes place in May as a public holiday. Veterans Day is to salute all U.S. military heros and celebrate their service, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service. The USA celebrating another military holiday called “Armed Forces Day” takes place in May, to salute for the military staff those who are currently serving in the U.S. military. Meanwhile, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military.
