Damascus included on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometers (50 mi) inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 meters (2,230 ft) above sea level. Generally, Damascus experiences a dry climate because of the rain shadow effect in all around the city. The Barada River flows through Damascus providing natural beauty.

In Damascus political decline can be seen throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance during the Ayyubid and Mamluk period. Currently, it represents the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. It has been 8 years since the start of the Syrian Civil War as of September 2019. Damascus has been known as the world’s least livable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
